Tenerife is a great deal more than the strip of hotels in the south. In a day you go from the beach up through the pine forest to the 2,000 metres of the national park, cross over to the north where everything turns green, and drop back down to Garachico, the village built on black lava. A driver who knows the bends, stops where the photo genuinely works, and time to eat properly — no coach-park queues.

The safari tour is half a day and stays closer to the south. This is the full lap: the north, Masca, Icod and the park up at altitude. If you only have one free day, take this one.
Yes. At the crater it can be 15 degrees colder than at your hotel, and there is usually wind. Bring a jumper even in August — everybody forgets and everybody regrets it.
